Slow Food Denver and Denver Urban Gardens are proud to announce the

1st Annual Youth Farmers’ Market and Garden to Cafeteria Workshop

February 10, 2012 at the Adams County Fairgrounds.

Join us as we share our best practices in establishing and conducting these vital programs to support other school districts in organizing and implementing them in their schools.  Both of these programs provide educational and fundraising opportunities for the school garden.

  • The Youth Farmers’ Market (YFM) program has been conducted for eight years in Denver Public Schools (DPS) with the 2011 season involving over 130 markets at 29 school sites and three Boys & Girls Clubs. The YFM program introduces students to basic business skills and the seasonality of Colorado produce, and allows for greater access to Colorado grown fresh fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods that lack the availability of fresh produce.
  • The Garden To Cafeteria (GTC) program is two years old and has resulted in the sale of over 2,000 pounds of school garden produce to DPS school cafeterias to be used in the salad bars.  The GTC program provides hands-on experiences for students to grow fresh produce and then see it served in the lunchroom.

The ideal participants for the workshop are school garden leaders, Food Service personnel, school administration and Food Safety experts. The workshop is free but space is limited and registration is required. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Andrew Nowak, workshop organizer, at conference@slowfooddenver.org.

The agenda for the workshop will include (click here for detailed agenda):
